If you want to learn how to play the guitar, chances are you will need to buy an own a guitar. You might be pondering, “What guitar do I buy?” Well, basically you will encounter three main types of guitar. There are the Classical Acoustic, the Acoustic and the Electric Guitar.

Now, how do you know which guitar you want to learn on? How do you decide what guitar to buy?

Well, if you are a brand new guitar player, I would recommend the good old classic acoustic guitar, or maybe a steel string acoustic. Acoustic guitars are excellent for beginners as you only need a pick, and you can’t turn them up loud. When you are learning it’s probably better to play on a guitar that is not too loud, only loud enough for your own listening, to hear your errors and your good playing. As a new player, you also do not want to worry about things such as leads, amps, speaker and power, and any other technical stuff required by an electric guitar.

The next question you need to ask yourself is this, “So, what kind of music do I want to play?” This is crucial as you need to know what style you want to play. Here is the general rule of thumb: acoustic guitars are softer and cleaner, where as electric guitars produce distorted, heavy sounds that are plugged into amplifiers and effects units. Pick a song that you like for its guitar sound and listen to the guitar sounds. Do you hear individual notes being picked, clean and soft sounds, or do you hear the strings being strummed hard? The style of music you like will determine the type of guitar that you should play on.
Once you know the style of music you like, you may like to try and find out the band video for the song that you picked and watch it. Watch in particular the guitarist. What guitar is the guitarist playing on? Is it an electric guitar or an acoustic guitar? What brand is it? In fact, if you can see the exact guitar for the video, you can check it out at your local guitar shop and see if it suits you.

Now beware! When shopping for any guitar … do not shop impulsively. Do not buy at first attempt only to regret later. A guitar is a major purchase and you want to get the right one. Do not commit hastily on a guitar purchase. Walk away and give yourself time to think about the purchase. If you are new to guitar, you may like to invite an experienced guitarist friend along when you are looking at a possible purchase. Not only your friend can help you with the guitar testing, he or she can also offer valuable tips and advice on your new guitar.
