External SATA (External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) is new data transfer standard, released in 2004, that allows faster data transfers between systems and external storage devices. SATA Interface has replaced ATA technology for hard drive internal bus interface. eSATA interface is more streamlined than ATA interface. The data transfer speed is up to 3Gb/s, which makes it three times faster than USB or Firewall cables and hence they are opted over such cable devices.
The primary benefit of eSATA is that it can carry out quick data transfers, since the data format used by this protocol is one that is understood by the system and this makes way for faster data pulling and pushing. The connection cable used by the device goes up to a length of 2m and is quite durable. Hence it is able to withstand rough usage. It can be just plugged to the device for usage and this eliminates the need to shut down the system to make use of the device. A PC considers eSATA as an ordinary drive in the BIOS and this enables users to boot directly into Windows through eSATA.
Another advantage of eSATA is that is can be used for making multiple connections to an external array. Since it has port multiplication capabilities, it is possible to use it for grouping eight Serial ATA hard drives and achieve excellent performance results. The eSATA cable will not consume more power from the system. It is durable and is also protected from a power overload.
eSATA standards are available in different forms. The original SATA has the initial standard and with successive evolution in SATA standards, data transfer speeds have enhanced. The Original SATA offers only a speed of up to 150 megabytes per second (MB/s), but the SATA 3G offers a highly enhanced speed of up to 3 GB/s. eSATA enables you to attach a fast SATA drive to your system and in doing so you can quickly enhance your system storage space.
